there were two tricks. . .
one there were electromagnets under stage those were used to switch on at the time they start leaning. . .(which MJ used)
other trick is there were a screw on stage which only dancer know where he is moves to the right position fits the screw in his shoe and lean down. . .

i dont know about the patent. . .
and thats no invention. . . someone may patent some step as intellectual property so as no one at professional level may use it but he can't paptent electromagnet :P
