Do you know what the word "associate" means? If you've ever heard anyone say "I don't associate with..." then you probably do. To associate with is to be paired with, to be connected to, to hang out with. If you look at that equation, it is exactly the same except for which variable b is hanging out with. On the second side, b is associating with c instead of a.
