New York City is built around some of the largest harbors in the world and they all face towards Europe. When colonial settlers came over from Europe they settled all along the eastern coast of what would become the United States of America, but as is typical throughout all of human civilization, certain cities located next to water became more populated. The greater number of people, access to water, and ease of trade because of the close proximity of water only further increased this "hub effect" for these cities. One of these became New York City. Post-colonial eras brought even more power to New York City as more legislative and financial activities crop up due to the efficiency of having them at the center of U.S. international commerce and immigrants flood in through some of the largest harbors in the world, diversifying the culture and providing huge labor supplies. At the forefront of trade and consequently technology, New York City utilized its enormous and varied labor pool and leveraged with it the roots of many U.S. financial and legal institutions to create America's premiere global power city.
