to keep it simple for an equation like Ax^2+Bx+c discriminant is D=B^2 - 4Ac it discriminant is less than zero than the equation has no real roots if it is greater than zero than it has real roots and distinct if it is equal to zero than it has real and equal roots if it is greater than and equal to zero than the equation has real roots
