how many significant figures do i include in any answer...is it the smallest amount of non zero digits from left to right...in the case of a figure like 9.00m do i include one of the zeros to the right of the decimal place when counting significant figures?
there should be three significant figures in this.. i.e. 9, 0, 0
so if i havwe 9.00m 40s and 8*10^-14kgs what number of decimal places do i give my answer to?
Trailing zeroes after a decimal are significant, so that first number (9.00) would have 3 significant figures. "8*10^-14" only has one non-zero number, 8, and therefore only one significant figure so I believe you would only include one significant figure in your answer. There's a good website for reviewing sigfig rules here: http://significantfigurescalculator.com/
40 s is a bit misleading as you do not know if there is only one, of if there are 2 sf. The only way to distinguish them to write 40 as either \(4\;10^1\) or \(4.0\;10^1\)
*is to write
for 8 * 10 to the power -14.. there is only one significant number... use following tips, 1. Leading zeros - No significance. 2. trailing Zero - No significance. 3. Number other than 0 - significant 4. 0`s between two numbers - consider them as significant number. 5. Trailing zero after decimal, consider them as significant numbers...
