A roller coaster starts with a 160-foot climb and then plunges 228 feet down canyon wall. It then climbs gradual 72 feet before a steep climb of 189 feet. Approximately how far is the coaster above or below its starting point

OpenStudy (anonymous):

+ 160 - 228 + 72 - 189 = ? The roller coaster is 185 feet below its starting point. :)

@JBrightman3 but in my book it says its 190 ft above its starting point

If the roller coaster goes up 160 feet and goes down 228 feet, then it is currently 68 feet below its starting point. Then it rises 72 feet, so it is 4 feet above its starting point. I'm sorry I misread the question before. I though it said a steep drop of 189 feet, but it is a steep climb. In that case, 4 + 189 is 193, so I don't know why your book says 190 feet above the starting point.

@JBrightman3 thanks :)
