How does a universal genetic code relate to the hypotheses about the origin of life on Earth?

OpenStudy (kainui):

What's your first guess?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The universality of the genetic code means that all living organisms are descended from one original organism

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That's a really good start. You could expand it, and talk about how the universal genetic code is a set of rules that encodes information in genetic material (DNA or mRNA ) and then translates it into proteins. But bear in mind, that's not the complete answer. :) It's only a signifiant portion that will help you out. I hope this helped you!

All organisms on Earth have one genetic code (except mitochondrias ). In fact, universal genetic code is fundamental evidence that all organisms (viruses, bacterias, eukaryotes) evolved from one common ancestor, because otherwise organisms should have different genetic codes. According to hypothesis of RNA world, all modern organisms came from one ancestor that was composed only from nucleic acids. This ancestor had RNA as a carrier of genetic information, and used same genetic code as now-living organisms.
