Not a physicist but...I think I can take this one! :) |dw:1341209914557:dw| Check out the picture - in case one, here's what would happen if the stone were thrown horizontally and were unaffected by anything else. As you mentioned, this doesn't actually occur - instead, it takes a curved path. Why? Well - see case two. It must be because a force is pushing down on the stone, causing its path to be curved. Can you guess what this downward force may be? :P Also - I suggest you check out the Physics group. You will find many gurus there far more skilled at this stuff :O
