Compound light microscopes have a focus feature and a light below the specimen to enhance details with he compound light microscope(CLM) you use a dye on the cells which, normally must be sliced extremely thin so you can see the structures that are normally clear, you can use living specimens or nonliving. With the SEM you place a nonliving specimen into a vacuum covered in a gold substance so that you can scan the surface of the structure rather than what's going on within the cells, it is hit with a beam of electrons and you are provided with a 2D picture of the structure in black and white.
