One big event since 1950 that made the world hold its breath was the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962 The Soviets decided to place nukes in Cuba, 90 miles from the US coast. In response, the US blockaded Cuba to prevent Soviet ships from delivering more equipment and demanded that the missiles be removed.
