In the picture below, triangle XYZ represents a fruit farm. The shaded area represents the area where strawberries are grown. Segments XY and TU are parallel. http://learn.flvs.net/webdav/assessment_images/educator_geometry_v14/pool_Geom_3641_0300_Subtest_05_17/image0034e1c8495.jpg What is the length of XT? 60 m 10 m 20 m 30 m I think the answer is 30 m

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

yes - because ZU:UY = ZT : TX

Thank you!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm confused here. If it's 30, then shouldn't the hypotenuse be \(\sqrt{60^2+60^2}\approx 85\)? Can you explain this, @cwrw238?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the triangles are congruent. If we look at the side ZUY it shuold be equal to ZTX and the sides for ZUY are 30, 30

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah, I get that part. But if both sides are \(60\), via Pythagorean theorem, \(c=\sqrt{60^2+60^2}\approx 85 \ne 100.\) My point is, I don't get how the hypotenuse is \(100\) in this case. (XY)

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

its the diagram limitless - its drawn as if Z is a right angle - but it can't be

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That's what I was beginning to think. Good observation.
