I have to determine if the line is parallel, perpendicular, or neither. 4x+y=-4 and 2y=10x-8

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

Rearrange and put each equation in the slope-intercept form.\[4x+y=-4\]\[y=-4x-4\]and\[2y=10x-8\]\[y=5x-4\]Does this help you? What are the slopes of the two equations? Are they parallel?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

slopeis -4 and 5 and they are neither parallel or perpendicular

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

yep.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i had that written on my test and my teacher wrote that wrong. ..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i stated the lines are neither parellel or perpendicular because the slopes are niether parallel or different slopes

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

Do you think it was the explanation that is wrong or that "neither" is the wrong answer? They are definitely neither parallel or perpendicular. If they were perpendicular, the slopes should be negative reciprocals of the other.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

neither was an option. ill ask her about it

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you!

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

you're welcome
