will the higgs boson be found?how does it solve the theory of everything?what could the discovery of the particle do when theories like string theory, einstein's theory failed?
Einstein's theory may not be failed although conclusions resulted from his equation may be wrong. If his theory can't explain particles of velocity higher than light that does not mean such particles may not exist. more over if higgs boson were found that may not explain strings theory or would contradict Einsteins theories(not necessarily). it depends on the conclusions scientist will assume considering practical evidences or data interpreted.
there are particle already existing like tacheyons which travel at speed faster than light but they have negative mass but till date nothing is observed thAT has contradicted einstein
please techyons does not exist its hypothetical particle. . . only neutrino has speed faster than light it has been proved in an experiment last year. einsteins has been held wrong already. please there is no such thing like negative mass. mass can not be negative. . .
@theyatin: Neutrinos were later found to NOT be moving faster than the speed of light...google it to see lots of articles on it. As far as the Higgs Boson, there's a lot of excitement this week about a "major announcement" tomorrow! http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/sns-rt-us-science-higgsbre86008k-20120701,0,7487097.story
hey, if anyone's listening i am really confused about what the media is saying about the Higgs boson, they have named it god particle and that it will explain whether our notions about the universe are right or wrong. i just wanna know if this is another media hype like the tau neutrinos or is there any truth in what they say and another thing i wanna know is that since the standard model does not incorporate the higgs boson so if its existence is confirmed what would happen? would it be incorporated into the standard model or would a new theory (or an existing one ) would replace the standard model?
@theytain yes u r rite what i had actually read was hypothetical particles like thacheyons if existed and traveled at a speed faster than speed of light they will have negative mass and so Einstein is not yet contradicted
The Higgs Boson is already part of the standard model...it's been predicted anyway and now they think they can have proven it exists. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/large-hadron-collider/9374758/Higgs-boson-scientists-99.999-sure-God-Particle-has-been-found.html
and reading articles on internet gives us half knowledge so we dont actually know anything, we will have a complete idea when we actuallly get to see the research paper
check out this announcement on CNN website: http://edition.cnn.com/2011/12/13/world/europe/higgs-boson-q-and-a/index.html?hpt=hp_c1 i read through the article and i still have many doubts about the higgs boson particle as well as the higgs theory. correct me if i'm wrong, but this is what i understood from the article : the higgs boson particle is what gives all the other particles their mass, right?. I wonder, then, what gives boson its own mass? and does it have mass? also, the higgs field that is everywhere, what kind of field is it? and does it interact with other fields, say for eg, the gravitation field? its all very confusing, yet very intriguing. after reading this article only, did i start thinking about "what exactly is mass?" and "where it comes from?". it really is a fundamental question. just like "what is charge?"
There's also a live feed of the announcement going on right now: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/large-hadron-collider/9374758/Higgs-boson-scientists-99.999-sure-God-Particle-has-been-found.html#disqus_thread
its over now...wasn't able to catch much of it.
Yea, it just ended about two minutes after I posted the link :/ It was mostly filled will silly media questions...better to read about it through the science community journals anyway.
true....doing that right now!
shane can you give me link of the journal which says neutrino is not faster than light??? please do it as much i think its rumour. . .
guys i think you understtood my question wrongly...i was saying that einsteins theory fits well with the very large...and quantum mechanics fits well with the very small..but both wont agree ..this caused a setback in finding the theory of everything..later string theory was proposed it too had problems with multidimensions...many say that the discovery of higgs could be the step for the theory of everything...well lets make it simple ...will the discovery of higgs unify the four forces(i saw IN discovery show THROUGH THE WORMHOLE , a man named lee invented something called lee group circles to describe the divine geometry of all particles..he also predicted it for higgs...he said he had unified the four forces....)
its not that simple to unify all four forces you can probabily unify 2 forces at a time. . . many people in history clained that they have unified all forces but its not so true. . . well concept of higs boson?? it will take months for scientist to retreive data collected and to make assumptions and conclusions out of it we can only wait. . .
I agree with @theyatin on the latter part. right now what we know abt higgs boson is bits and pieces we picked up from here and there [ at least that is how it is for me!]. since experiments are still on, u won't find a definite answer to ur questions right now. just individual perspectives.
