There's an easy way of doing this without a calculator. 1) take 50% of 88... divide it in half. 2) now add 5%. Because 50% is easy to calculate, you can divide this number by 10 to find 5%. 3) Add them together!

^^ So, without using a calculator, I get: \[88\div2=44\] then, \[44\div10=4.4\] Thus, \[44 + 4.4=48.4\]
