the absolute value of a number is the distance the number is from zero

In addition to nitz ....see sometimes when we apply integration and apply the upper lim at lower lim and lower lim as upper lim ..... especially in area and volume questions ... sometimes integration is used to find volums that are not measurable such as an irregular tower or tower for storing water ..... so we sometimes eventually end up getting our answers as negative .... since real dimensions cant be negative so we take it as positive ... thus this is absolute value example by the way \[\left| x \right|=\sqrt{x ^{2}}\]

An absolute value is used when you only care about the magnitude of a number and you don't care whether the number is positive or negative. For example there are times in statistics when your are dealing trying to find out if the average of a sample matches a particular bell curve. It may the the that sample average is to greater or less than the average of the bell curve. When you do your statistical analysis, you don't care which it is, just that the average is outside of a predetermined standard limit . You would use an absolute value as part of some rather complicated calculations.
