Literal equations have almost no numerical values and therefore, you usually have to solve for one of the variables and can simplify near nothing since you don't know any values.

solving an equation is different from computing with numbers. when you simplify an expression like the one given you go from inside to outside. when you solve an equation you go from outside to inside.
