Is it motivation - wake up each day and want to learn?
Is it striving to excel - go beyond what you are learning?
Is it "socialness" - creating a network of peers in that language?

It is motivation. Without it, everything else falls apart.

Motivation seems to me to lead to the others.

I agree that motivation is the quality you need, but for me motivation does not come without a clear goal.
