Which of the following does not represent a function? x −2 0 1 −2 9 y 0 −1 −2 −3 −4 x 3 6 9 12 18 y 2 4 6 8 10 x −3 −1 0 2 4 y −6 −4 −3 −2 −1 x 8 7 4 3 1 y −7 −5 −3 −2 −1
Find the one that has multiple values of y for the same value of x.
is it D ?
Does D have multiple values of y for the same value of x? If so, which values?
A
Again: Does A have multiple values of y for the same value of x? If so, which values?
B
Stop guessing.
ok its C
You're still guessing. Stop guessing.
its c
I'm not going to tell you what the answer is, because you're not trying to solve the problem, you're just guessing each answer to try to see if I'll tell you which one is correct. Stop guessing, and actually try to work out the problem. It is not hard.
it c
x −3 −1 0 2 4 y −6 −4 −3 −2 −1
Does C have multiple values of y for the same value of x? If so, which values?
Another way to approach this type of problem is to look at the domain (the x values) of each choice. Do any of the domains have the same value for x listed more than once? If so (there is only one that does in this problem) do you get the same y value for that x value both times? If not, that is not a function. (nbouscal - I know that's about the same thing you said!)
