You are fixing ice cream cones for your friends. You have the set of toppings and flavors below. Find A X B. A = {sprinkles, cherries, fudge} B = {vanilla, chocolate, strawberry}

OpenStudy (ledah):

A X B. what does that mean? you mean A*B?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The intersection or union.

OpenStudy (ledah):

hm. alright. so what steps would you take to find A X B?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Similar example: If A = {6,7} and B = {8,9,10} then A X B = {(6,8),(6,9),(6,10),(7,8),(7,9),(7,10)} You basically form ordered pairs where the first coordinate comes from set A and the second coordinate comes from set B

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

btw, this is known as the cross product

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

or cartesian product

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Apply tree diagram method to see 3 x 3 = 9 combinations!

OpenStudy (ledah):

Well that's better than what I would've said. well said.

Ok , thanks !
