what is the gaussian thingy of matrices and how is it used?

i think so...it's the one with the \[\huge \left[\begin{array}{ccc} 1 & 0 & 0 \\ 0 & 1 & 0 \\ 0 & 0 & 1 \end{array} \right]\]
this is used to reduce matrices in row echelon form or diagonal matrix using basic row -column operations which are used in turn for various purposed like solving linear system. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaussian_elimination#Example
O.O im not familiar with those terms so i dont think it's how we'll apply them
is there a simpler use of it?
