Explain this poem to me?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The cold earth slept below; Above the cold sky shone; And all around, With a chilling sound, From caves of ice and fields of snow The breath of night like death did flow Beneath the sinking moon. The wintry hedge was black; The green grass was not seen; The birds did rest On the bare thorn’s breast, Whose roots, beside the pathway track, Had bound their folds o’er many a crack Which the frost had made between. Thine eyes glow’d in the glare Of the moon’s dying light; As a fen-fire’s beam On a sluggish stream Gleams dimly—so the moon shone there, And it yellow’d the strings of thy tangled hair, That shook in the wind of night. The moon made thy lips pale, beloved; The wind made thy bosom chill; The night did shed On thy dear head Its frozen dew, and thou didst lie Where the bitter breath of the naked sky Might visit thee at will.

i know its about winter and stuff but is it talking about someone being dead?

OpenStudy (crystal99):

I believe it's a really sad poem............ About someone,a really close one dying........

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wow @Crystal99 you were so much help not. You basically said what she said. How did you help? If your going to reply to something make sure it will actually help the person out. Jeez. @bleh123 yes this poem is about death from my interpretation of it. It is clearly describing the setting of where maybe is lover has passed away. Or is close to passing away. Because it says "Thine eyes glow’d in the glare Of the moon’s dying light; " So from that the person was staring at the moon as the person is slowly passing away. Also, another part that shows that this person is now a spirit or ghost is, "Might visit thee at will." When your supposedly a ghost or spirit you can visit anyone you want to in terms of speaking. Where it says "And it yellow’d the strings of thy tangled hair, ", it automatically tells you that it should be a person a woman even perhaps. The key to finding out the meaning of poems is TAKE YOUR TIME. It is a whole lot easier if you pick each line apart and find as much meaning as you can in each sentence. If yoou can't find what one line means is don't sweat it. Just keep moving on to line after line, then you should be able to put it all together to find out your interpretation of the poem for yourself. :))) Hope this helps. If not message me and I will try to help.

I think it's about a woman in the forest. She's most likely lost and trapped as the icy weather has gotten to her. Slowly she is fading away and someone she knows promises to visit her sometime after she dies. Or like gdogthegirl said she might be a ghost that will haunt somebody. I don't know but that's just what I think. I'm no Shakespeare thats for sure.

I am so sorry......... Please accept my apology,it's just that i really that it means that way........... Sorry.....
