what does standard deviation give you? can you provide an explanation? How is it used?

it provides how much variance is present due to the average.

iit says S measures spread about the mean and shoul dbe used only when mean is chosen as measure of center. so is the S measures spread about the mean different from measuring the spread by the variance (where you find average distance....that seems to me like a kind of spread too)

but variance measures spread as well no? i thought variance measured the average distance each point is from the mean

variance shows the average of the squared distance from the mean whereas standard deviation shows how dispersed they are
