what does standard deviation give you? can you provide an explanation? How is it used?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

standard deviation = square root of variance it provides how much variance is present due to the average. they show how dispersed the data is

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how exactly does standard deviation provide you with how much variance is present ? I dont see how it does this due to average. I see how variance is like the average distance each point is from the mean but i still dont get what exactly standard deviation shows u...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

iit says S measures spread about the mean and shoul dbe used only when mean is chosen as measure of center. so is the S measures spread about the mean different from measuring the spread by the variance (where you find average distance....that seems to me like a kind of spread too)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

bigger standard deviation shows that the data has very broad differences...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but variance measures spread as well no? i thought variance measured the average distance each point is from the mean

OpenStudy (anonymous):

variance shows the average of the squared distance from the mean whereas standard deviation shows how dispersed they are
