Circular DNA and ribosomes unique to prokaryotes are both found inside mitochondria and chloroplasts. It are traces of a individual system of metabolism and reproduction. Most of these functions still operate, like the reproduction of mitochondria. Some circular DNA coding for these functions have moved to the nucleus or have disappeared all together.
