an external covering or integument, especially when hard, as the shells of crustaceans.

so basicly its a structure giving an organism support and/or protection, that is on the outside of an organism, usually insects etc. The key is that it is situated on the outside of the organism, rather than on the inside like our 'endoskeleton'
