because these equations have the same variables, and the coefficient of the y from the first equation is opposite the coefficient of the y from the 2nd equation. Add the equations straight down and the y variable cancels out. you then can solve for x. after you have x, substitute the value into either of the original equations and find y.
coefficient is the number in front of the variable.
im confused.... so i do it like this? 3x+y=-1 5x-y=9 ------------- 8x+8?
