If you want to explain all of the DC generator then it is better to refer any book.

Since the generator still utilizes a rotating armature within a stator (magnetic field) if the output is taken from two  complete slip rings it will be AC.  But if the slip rings are split, and the arrangement is designed so the output is routed through the load in the same direction by switching the waveform at the 0 voltage points (Sine wave) as for as the load is concerned it is DC as the current thru the load never changes direction.
