I believe I have to read this equation as a quadratic equation, let me write it down again so I avoid mistakes:\[x^2+5x-24=0\]
the Discriminant of said equation is given by D:\[D=b^2-4ac=121\]
Since it is positive you will have two solutions, just as jackellyn mentioned.
\[\sqrt{D}=\pm 11\]
So you can solve the quadratic equation and you will get.
\[x_1=3\] and
\[x_2=-8\]
