- x^(-2) is the same as (3 - (x^-1))*(3 + (x^-1)) So you can replace (9 - (x^-2)) in your problem to get: [(3 - (x^-1))*(3 + (x^-1))] / (3 + (x^-1)). 3 + (x^-1) cancels, and you are left with just 3 - (x^-1)
