Hmmm, I would say it's not really a commentary, but rather a warning that if people become ignorant of the government that controls them, severe consequences will follow.

I believe it was a commentary on 1949 America, just as much as it was a predictor of current events now. Many of the media techniques were borrowed from both Nazi Germany and the beginning Cold War.
