I satrt for the grap go to the left frist find the slope,I use; ( (-2.4) and (4,0) slope=( y2-y1)/(x2-x1) = (0-4)/(4-(-2))= - 2/3
Well first we notice that they both cross the point (4,0). For the line going top-bottom, it also crosses the point (1,2). Now we have two points we know our line crosses, and that is enough to determine the equation. the slope (m) for this line will be y(1) - y(2)/ x(1) - x(2) m = (0-2)/ (4-1) = -2/ (3) m = -2/3 So the equation of the line going top-bottom will be y = mx + b. y = -2/3(x) + b we know that one of the points is (4,0) or when x =40, y=0. So lets go ahead and plug that in: 0 = -2/3 (4) + b 0 = -8/3 + b b = 8/3 so the equation of the first line is: y = -2/3(x) + 8/3 Now for the line going bottom-top. We know it crosses (4,0). And if we look closely, it also crosses (2,-2). So the slope (m) will be: m = 0 - (-2)/ 4 - 2 m = 2/2 m = 1 So y = x + b, plugging in the point (4,0): 0 = 4 + b b = -4 And the equation of the second line is: y = x -4
y = mx= b I use ; (-2,4) subtitution 4 = [-(2/3)* -2] +b 4= (4/3)+b 4- (4/3)=b (12-4)/3= b 8/3= b the equation :\[y=-\frac{3}{2}x+\frac{8}{3}\]
