solve the problem five times a number is 120

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got 60

OpenStudy (shane_b):

Write it as it sounds: 5x=120 What would x be here?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the hidden number

OpenStudy (shane_b):

Right...and to solve for it what would you need to do?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think divide is it 60

OpenStudy (shane_b):

Where is 60 coming from? You need to divide both sides by 5 so that x is on one side by itself...which will give you the answer.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

o its 20

OpenStudy (anonymous):

am i right

OpenStudy (shane_b):

120/5 does not equal 20

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think i just figured it out its 10

OpenStudy (shane_b):

\[5x=120\]\[\frac{5x}{5}=\frac{120}{5}\]\[x=\frac{120}{5}\]\[x=24\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks for being so patient

OpenStudy (shane_b):

No problem...hopefully you are beginning to understand it :)
