Squanto and Powhatan. how they were different Next, show how the lives of these individuals were similar,
An excellent source on this is a book called "The Mayflower". Squanto had been kidnapped and brought to England as a slave. He escaped and took a ship back to southern Maine, and then walked all the way back to the South Shore of Massachusetts, specifically Plymouth. He was a schemer, and was always playing one tribe off against another, or against the Pilgrims. He had dreams of becoming a Chieftain, but was often caught in his own lies. While he acted as a translator between the Pilgrims and the natives, it is suspected that he didn't always translate correctly (on purpose) to better enhance his own standing. Powhatan was a chief, and was quite committed to his people and to peace. He appears to have been a man of high moral character.
