OpenStudy (sheryl):

What is the correct expression--"If I WAS her, I would go" or "If I WERE her, I would go"? Please explain.

OpenStudy (kanzu):

in the first place, i have to mention that i am not a native speaker, my english is acquired 20 yrs after my birth. yet, what i was taught once upon a time is that it should be the 2nd option you suggest - "if i were her, ..". :)

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

yes. "if i were her" is the right one because the subject is not "her" but it is "I". In grammar, we usually treat I as a plural noun (note: usually..not always. there are times when it's used as singular but very rarely).
