Factor x^2 − 2x + 3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it will look something like this (x-M)(x-N). so all you need to do is determine M and N such that M + N = -2 AND M * N = 3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

try it...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Whey (x-M)(x-N) and not (x-M)(x+N) or something similar? (*I* know why, but that's a jump that lots of students fail to make)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@shandelman , i just read your post on feedback... and i know u know....:)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay thanks!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yw...:)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

would (x − 3)(x − 1) be the answer? orr...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@dpaInc ?

If you think you've found the answer, you can use the FOIL method to see if you were right. (x-3)(x-1) = x^2 - 1x - 3x + 3 = x^2 - 4x + 3 so you're not quite right.

it would be prime. correct?
