If a gene is like a message passed between generations, the alleles of that gene are all the possible contents that message can have. They are often referred to as 'versions of a gene.'

Gametes are reproductive cells. They have half the number of chromosomes as normal body cells, so when two gametes fuse they form a single, fertilized cell. This single, fertilized cell divides many times and eventually becomes an organism.

Gametes are contained in the testes of men and the ovaries of women.
