That is a capital sigma. It means the sum of the counting numbers from 1 to 8.

Well, @Valpey is right for this particular problem, but in general, you take the range of values from the number on the bottom to the number on the top (in this case 1 to 8) and put them into the expression on the right (in this case, just "n"), and evaluate...and then add up all the answers. If the expression is just n, then yeah, you're just adding the numbers from 1 to 8, but the expression could be something like n^2, and then you're adding 1^2 + 2^2 + 3^3, and so on and so forth.
