Why are producers important to energy transfer within an ecosystem?

OpenStudy (stephstar101):

They're important because they harvest energy from the sun, our main energy source, while other organisms are unable to do so. They convert it over to substances other organisms can use

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The producers create the energy that the consumers need to survive. So the energy is transferred from the producer to the consumer and then some other animal comes and eats that first animal and so the energy is transferred from the first producer to the last consumer.
