When you subtract mixed numbers, how do you know when you need to regroup?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is there an example attached to this problem?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Nope.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

To subtract mixed numbers, the following procedure is followed: Step 1: Convert all mixed numbers to improper fractions. Step 2: Subtract the fractions Step 3: If the result is an improper fraction, convert it into a mixed number, and if not, leave it as a proper fraction, the answer.

Will that help?

OpenStudy (uri):

It will be easier to explain if give some example or problem. e.g. 3 1/4 – 2 1/2 = (3 + 1/4) – (2 + 1/2) = 3 – 2 + 1/4 – 1/2 = 1 – 1/4 = 3/4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(3+1/4)-(2+1/2) \[\left(\frac{13}{4}\right)-\left(\frac{5}{2}\right) \]\[\left(\frac{13}{4}\right)-\left(\frac{10}{4}\right)=\frac{3}{4} \]
