what are some ways of making procedures/procedure definitions always available in the environment?

i.e. if i want to add this procedure definition - [code] (define (square x) (* x x)) [/code] - and use 'square' anytime in the future, where do i create the definition? in a scm file? in a specific directory? elsewhere?

yes you can place that procedure on a scm file and then load it.
or
you can copy-paste that square definition at the top of your current working environment (another file or the interpreter session).
