The figure below shows two similar pictures that Sheila wants to frame Sheila has three strips of unfinished molding that she wants to use to frame the two pictures. Each strip is 36 inches long. Assuming there is no wastage or overlap of molding, what is the minimum length of molding, in inches, Sheila still requires to frame both the pictures? Show your work and explain your reasoning in complete sentences.

Since the figures are similar they have the same width-to-height ratio. So using the ratio\[\left(\begin{matrix}w{_1} \\ h{_1}\end{matrix}\right) = \left(\begin{matrix}w{_2} \\ h{_2}\end{matrix}\right)\] so \[w{_1} = (w{_2}/h{_2}) \times h{_1}\] \[w{_1} = (32/25) \times 37.5 = 48\] The total perimeter of the both figures will therefore be \[P = 2(37.5) + 2(48) + 2(25) + 2(32) = 284.0\] Since she has a total length of 108 inches of molding but 284 inches is required the total deficit of molding that she requires is 176 inches

whats deficit mean?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The deficit is just the amount of molding she needs or the difference between how much she has and how much she needs
