Why are liquids non-compressible, whereas gases are compressible?

OpenStudy (dls):

Because in liquids, the molecules are loosely packed but in gases they are packed more losely than liquids! this gives them more space to move and hence they can be compressed easily

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But why such a sudden drop between being easily compressible and completely non-compressible?
