MAT 142 Problem set Unit: Sets Topic: Comparing Sets Directions: Solve the following problems. Please show your work and explain your reasoning. 1. Let U = { New York (NY), Illinois (IL), Arizona (AZ), Kansas (KS), California (CA), Texas (TX), Virginia (VA), Maryland (MD), Florida (FL) } D = { NY, IL, AZ, VA } E = { NY, IL, AZ, VA, FL } F = { AZ, CA, TX, FL } a. Is D E? Why or why not? b. Is D U? Why or why not? c. Is F F? Why or why not? d. Is F equivalent to D? Why or why not? e. How many subsets does the Universal Set U have?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think you're missing some symbols in questions a, b, and c.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is \(D\cap E\)? That doesn't make sense. Are you sure it's not \(D\subset E\)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you are correct my mistake wrong page and b is the same with a ;line under the symbol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

my typing sucks sorry

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, so you understand that symbol right? It's the subset symbol. So it's asking whether D is a subset of E. Subset means, every element in D is also an element in E. Does that help?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes are there 81 set sets? to U

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Nope. 81 would be \(\large9^2\), what you're looking for is \(\large2^9\).

great thanks!
