a sequence is only a function so for instance you could have \[ \large x_j=j\mod 3 \] i mean x_j is equal to the residue of dividing j into 3. this way the range of x is 0, 1 and 2

Well, it's a function with the domain being the natural numbers. Mod 3 is a nice example, of course.
