Two cars are travelling in opposite directions. After 3hours, they are 297 miles apart. If one car is travelling 5mph faster than the other, what is the speed of each car?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Let the speed of one car be x. So speed of the other car is (x + 5). Distance traveled by the first car after 3 hrs = 3x Distance traveled by the second car after 3 hours = 3(x + 5) = 3x + 15 Do you have an idea how to equate these values now?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no

OpenStudy (anonymous):

trying to figure it out

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it 297=3x+15?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Actually even I'm a bit confused now.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No they are 297 miles apart and 3x + 15 is the distance traveled by the second car.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im confuse

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So am I.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This involves linear equations right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i guess
