When was the earliest time a composer could have written music for the sax?

My source: http://musiced.about.com/od/lessonsandtips/a/saxhistory.htm The sax was invented by Adolphe Sax in 1841. Wikipedia lists the invention of the saxophone as 1846, but I believe that is because Adolphe Sax didn't get patents for his instruments until 1846. However, he revealed his instrument to the public and to composers before then, so I imagine music could have been composed for the instrument as early as 1841.
