How do theologians use physics in their profession

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Not at all, essentially.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay if not all of them how do some of them use physics in their profession

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Church of Scientology? :-P Yeah much of what theologians have said relating to physics has been wrong, dead wrong. (i.e.: geocentric universe, the sun the God Helios racing his chariot across the sky, the constellations are celestial beings, Isaac Newton deciding there are 7 visible colors because it's a holy number in Christianity, etc.)

There are also those who try to say the Big Bang is proof of God, ignoring the fact that the Big Bang is simply a model for why things exist and why the universe is expanding. It's not an answer to why, only more questions. Science focuses on what is known, or proving observed phenomena so you understand it can and it can be predicted in similar or related circumstances. But what science can't do is answer the philosophical "why" questions. I'd like to point out as well, science and religion are not at odds on this like many organized religions have professed (in their ignorance) over the millennia (check out some of the stories of the early astronomers to see what "the Church" said about their "heretical" ideas), the more science finds out about how the universe works, the more we realize how little we know and how insignificant we are in the larger scale of the universe.

In short, this is a bad/flawed question to ask, but a very interesting one @maameb :-)

Or, in short, as further fodder to validate their beliefs.
