In how many ways can a transportation committee of fifteen senators be chosen from the 100 members of the U.S Senate, then a 10 member health committee be formed? Really sorry for all the questions, my guess is as follows..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So: 100c15 and 85c10 would assumably by the choices needed..

I just don't know whether to add these values or multiply

OpenStudy (anonymous):

general guideline is if you have "or" you add and if you have "and" you multiply this is very general so don't take it too literally

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay....so.. 253338471349988640 x 3129162672636? that seems like an awfully big value...are my nCr things right? :S

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you are correct, there are \(_{100}C_{15}\) for first one and then \(_{85}C_{10}\) for second counting principle then says if there are \(n\) ways to do one thing and \(m\) ways to do another, then the number of ways to do them both is \(n\times m\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes, it is an amazingly large number

http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=%28100+choose+15%29*%2885+choose+10%29 some number of octillions
