The process in which two Paramecia come together to exchange parts of their genetic material is called
Conjugation is the defined term in which genetic material is transferred through a temporary apparatus normally known as pilus (in bacteria) or cytoplasmic bridge (eukaryotes) between one micro organism and another. The content of this genetic exchange can in the form of a partial genome or plasmid (circular strand of DNA), the newly introduced genome is then integrated into the host genome. This new genome usually confers a survival advantage to the micro organism in question, this can range from antiobiotic resistance or ability to process new sources of food. etc http://www.uwlax.edu/biology/Zoo-Lab/Lab-03/Paramecium-Conjugation.htm
