Simplify the following expression: (x − 8y) - (2x − 4y). If the final answer is written in the form Ax + By, what is the value of B?

hero (hero):

Hint: (x - 2x) + (-8y + 4y)

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

now factor out the x form the first bracket and factor y out from the second bracket

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-x - 4y ? so the answer would be -4y?

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

so close

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

you have simplified correctly

hero (hero):

-x - 4y is correct. I don't know why you got rid of the -x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the question is asking for the value of b so the answer would be jus -4 i think right?

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

\[-x-4y\]\[Ax + By\] \[A=-1;\qquad B=?\]

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

thats it

hero (hero):

lol, I only read one part of the question. Now I see what's going on

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thank you people were telling me the answer is 12 for some reason

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

the answer to the question at the top pf the page is not 12

hero (hero):

So this means @helpmexoxo had it correct all along. B = -4

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

if you are trying to get 12 you might have the wrong question if the expression was -(x − 8y) - (2x − 4y) then B=12

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

or if it was (x + 8y) - (2x − 4y) then B=12
