quite simple really, just like any other polynomial dont let the a^2 and b^2 scare you. so you do it like this: a^2 + 12ab + 27b^2 sum =12ab product = 27a^2b^2 am thinking of 9ab and 3ab rearranging the equation: a^2 + 12ab + 27b^2 a^2 + 9ab +3ab + 27b^2 factoring a(a + 9b) + 3b(a +9b) (a+3b) (a+9b) expand and see if you'll get original equation.
